Marco da Silva Ferreira

Originally a competitive swimmer, then a self-taught dancer, Marco da Silva Ferreira is now an established choreographer whose work draws on street dance, classical technique, club culture and folklore. It is in the friction between these forms that he finds a powerful political charge.

Born in 1986 in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, he trained as a physiotherapist—though he never practised—before turning fully to movement. After years of competitive swimming, he shifted towards dance and performance practices rooted in urban and club culture. As a professional dancer, he has worked with André Mesquita, Hofesh Shechter, Sylvia Rijmer, Tiago Guedes, Victor Hugo Pontes, and Paulo Ribeiro. He has also worked as an artistic and choreographic assistant on several productions.

His choreographic work engages closely with urban dance forms, reflecting on their contemporary meaning through a highly personal, often abstract language. His career gained momentum in 2013 with HU(R)MANO. This was followed by BROTHER (2016) and BISONTE (2019), which toured widely across Europe.

He was associate artist at Teatro Municipal do Porto (2018–2019) and at the National Choreographic Centre of Caen (2019–2021). Since 2023, he has been associate artist at the Maison de la Danse in Lyon, a position he will hold until 2027.
